The Diversity Times
Jon Gramling
I am the publisher and editor of The Capital City Hues, but for three weeks out of the year, it is my pleasure to be the
editor of The Diversity Times. Writing is a lot of fun for me, although it can be very difficult and trying as well. It
allows me to say things that I find difficulty saying to someone in person. I think what made me a good writer — at
least people tell me I am a good writer, but I always have my doubts. — is that I read all the time when I was younger
and used my imagination to really picture in my mind what the words were saying. Eventually, it then became easy
for me to picture something in my mind and then put it into words on paper.
I am proud of my son Andrew who teaches English as a Foreign Language in Nanning, China. He has lived in China
for approximately two years. We keep in touch via QQ, a videoconferencing software that allows us to see and talk to
each other via the Internet. I don’t miss him quite so much because I can see him. That is so cool! When I heard
there was a massive earthquake in China, I was worried at first, but then learned it was about 600-700 miles from
where he lives. I felt sorry for the people who had died or were injured, but I was very grateful that my son was alive.
Caitlynn Daniels
I’m 14 years old and I’m going to be a freshman at West High School in the
fall. My favorite subject in school is math. I really enjoy photography. My two
favorite sports are volleyball and rowing. During my free time I like to hang out
with my friends, shop, sing, play volleyball and row.
Kzong Her
My name is Kzong Her. Some people pronounce it differently because my
name is unique; no one has a name like that that I know of. I am a student in
the PEOPLE program in the summer and spend time here and work in workshop
like this one. It is called "Exploring college through the media." When I first
came to the class I didn’t know what it was, and I thought it was something I
didn’t know what to do.  But when I got to the class, it was kind of fun, and the
first day we took pictures outside and to see around UW campus. It was nice.

La'Tricia Hill
I am a rising 9th grader going to West High School. I love writing stories and  poetry. I
am an excellent leader and I do what I think is right. I don’t depend on anybody
because I feel that some people aren’t reliable. I am creative and I like to try new
things even if I am scared. I take risks and love to go outdoors and explore the world
from many different views. When I have something to say I like to write it down
because to me it’s easier than saying what’s on my mind.
The PEOPLE program helps more minorities or more students go to college so they
can be what they want to be when they grow up and succeed in life. The program
draws a certain number of students each year to participate. The way you can get in
is in the 6th grade when you fill out an application and show them a transcript
(grades). The PEOPLE program is different from other programs because it allows you
to learn while having fun. Each year, you get assigned to a different class and you
learn about the topic. On the first day, you come in do introduction, have breakfast,
and then leave to go to your workshop.
That’s just the beginning. During the PEOPLE program, you work in your workshop for
about 3- 4 hrs. then you go home. The total program for the summer is about 3 weeks,
unless you’re a rising 9th grader, then it is 5 weeks. At the end of the session, you
have a display were you show and tell about what you did over the weeks. You stay in
the program until you graduate from high school, and then you’re off to college!
(They pay for it)
Iaong Lee
I’m a sixth-grader girl from Sherman Middle School who goes by the name of Iaong.
Yes, I know, it is a very hard name to pronounce. But so many people have
mispronounced it before that I’m used to it , so you may call me whatever suits you
best. I have many interests like reading books, languages, food, movies, the world,
cultures, and writing. I love to write. Writing is something I want to do for the rest of my
life. I feel that writing is fun because you can express your feelings and expand your
ideas on paper and let your imagination go wild! But of course, I still have much more
to learn about writing. I also love to read. Reading is one of my hobbies, just like
biking, hanging out with my friends, talking on the phone, swimming, and writing.
Reading helps me become a better writer and it makes me smarter. That’s why reading
and writing are my main hobbies and interests. But there are also two other things that I
am obsessed with: the Internet and movies/dramas. I love the Internet because you can
do so many things on there and that’s the only way I can keep in contact with my
friends now that school’s over. But I also like the Internet because there is a special
website that I go to and post my stories and other people read them and enjoy them.
Another major reason for me liking the Internet is because I can watch many dramas
and movies on there. I get most of my story ideas from the books I read and the movies
I watch. I don’t know, I just love too many things.
Tori Kay Mudler
I’m a student at James C. Wright Middle School. I’m getting a 4.0 grade average
and I love it. I think people should be more considerate about the planet especially
now. Global warming is getting to be very hazardous. I’ve always wanted to be a
photographer because nature is the most beautiful thing I can see every day. I love
animals too, because they are no different from us — they eat, sleep and breathe, so
no animal should be treated differently.
I love to swim; that is one of my many favorite things to do during my free time. I
love grill cheese. When I was about seven or eight, I ate grill cheese for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner. Basically, I ate it 24/7!
The reason I’m here in this class, "Exploring college through the media" is because I
love to write down my ideas and share them with people, along with a photo on the
side, so I hope you think my ideas and photos are great, too! 

Kevin Navarro
I am here at the PEOPLE program with my class in "Exploring college through
media" with my teachers Jon Gramling, Molly Somers and Monica White.
Oona Olaiya
I’m a rising 9th grader and I will be attending West High School next year. I can’t wait
for high school in the fall but I’m still pretty nervous. After I graduate from high school,
I hope to become a doctor, maybe working in the infant ICU, or as a pediatrician or a
psychiatrist, I haven’t quite made up my mind yet. I really like to just hang out with
friends and cool down after school, or any time for that matter. I believe that being
outside and going to the pool with your friends is a necessity in the summer and I plan
to do it as much as I can.
Jaliyah Williams
My name is Jaliyah s. Williams. I’m a 6th grader who attends Sherman  middle
school I’m a rising 7th grader. Some of my favorite subjects in school are science,
reading, writing and social studies
. I love school. I get a  4.0 grade average. When I
get older, I want to be a lawyer or a journalist. I signed up for PEOPLE program
because I think it’s a great opportunity to become something. I chose "Exploring
college through media"  because I love to explore my future as much as I can
now. It just seemed fun also now that I’m doing it. It's something I would love to
do again.
On my free time I go to the mall and hang out with friends. I love swimming. Also,
I love shoes, clothes, and my family. I am a proud  pre-college student who
attends UW in the summer.
Baritan Yang
I am one of the students of PEOPLE Program's "Exploring college
through media." I go to O’Keeffe Middle School. I like to read but I
don’t like math at all. I like to have fun and hang out with friends. I
am 11 years old turning to 12 this year on July 2nd.
Molly Somers
This fall I am going to be starting my senior year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an Elementary
Education Major.  I have also decided to focus some of my studies on French and Education Policy Studies.   If I
had to choose one aspect about teaching that I adore the most, it would be the moments in the classroom when
you can see your students understand the difficult material you have been teaching them.  It is those “ah-ha!”
moments that I cherish the most.  I cannot wait to graduate from this prestigious university and teach in a classroom
of my own.
I also have been playing trumpet in the University of Wisconsin-Marching Band for the past three years.  Joining the
Marching Band has been one of the best decisions I have made throughout my college experience.  Along with
the 300+ friends I have made, I have also gotten many opportunities to travel with the band to support various
Badger Athletic events such as football, basketball, and hockey games.  The memories I have created as a
member of the UW-Marching Band are memories I will cherish forever.

Monica White
Hi! my name is Monica White and I am a teaching assistant for the workshop: Exploring College through the Media!
I am very grateful for this position because not only do I get to work with a fantastic group of students, but I am able
to learn and grow with them, and gain valuable experience for the future. This is my second year doing this
workshop, so I am very familiar with the layout, and I know the students will have a blast!  A little more about me: I
am originally from Milwaukee, Wis., and I am a PEOPLE Scholar, meaning I am very familiar with the PEOPLE
Program. I will be a junior in the fall at the University of Madison. My major is…hold your breath….Human
Development and Family Studies with a focus on Child Development. In the future, I want to work with youth from
my community, to help them succeed in life by helping them prepare for college or higher education. Some
things that I like to do are swim, talk on the phone, shop, and hang with my family back in Milwaukee. I am a very
down-to-earth type of girl and I love meeting new people.
