It was incredible taking photos yesterday.  I had never seen Lake Mendota
look so high with waves splashing over the top of the deck. Usually, we
would have to walk down some steps to reach the water. Even some of
the walkways and piers were unusable because the water was flowing over
them. It was a totally different scene at the Union Terrace and made me
think about the farmers whose fields are flooded and the people who lost
their homes or whose basements are flooded.  It made me feel sad
thinking about them.
The first day of the PEOPLE Program is always difficult because the
students have just finished school and are beginning another educational
session immediately. However, it seems that the photography session
always gets everyone in the mood. And I think everyone had a good time.
Every time I go to take photos on the Library Mall and Union Terrace, it
always seems that there is something new of which I can take photos.
With new students and new things to photograph, it is always a pleasant
experience!

I loved taking pictures yesterday. We went to
the UW campus and to the Union Terrace. At the
Union were the most beautiful flowers. I got a
bunch of pictures of those. The lake wasn’t in
very good condition. Since we got so much rain,
the water was very high.

It was fun to go outside and see and take a lot of pictures of all
the wildlife, like animals and insects. It was fun to take pictures of
people and what they were doing, and to see all the nice things
they made like paper cranes, drawings and paintings. The food
they were selling looked good to eat and smell.  And the flowers ...
they just looked beautiful. It's nice to see how flowers looked like
as the insects pollinated the flowers. The waves that washed up on
the port and the winds blowing the waves high up and flooding the
place were incredible. The water was high on Monday the 16th of
June 2008.  It was nice to see people active and exploring UW
campus. -

Taking photos yesterday was a great experience.  I noticed that
you must observe everything around you in order to take good
pictures. You have to make sure that you know when the right
time to turn the flash on and when to turn it off. Taking photos
of ordinary, everyday things such as flowers or buses is an easy
thing to do.  But to make it a good photo, I try to find a way to
make it my own and take it from a different point of view, one
that has not been seen by other people. There are amazing
pictures out there, but it’s also astonishing how one small
mistake is made and the pictures are ruined. That’s why you
must pay attention and not get distracted when you are taking
photos in order to take good ones.
It was very fun going to the lake and taking pictures. It can
sometimes be hard to take creative photos depending on where
you are. But I find that taking pictures of the lake and the
things around it is fun and easy. The water is gorgeous and the
sun’s reflections off the lake make it shine in the pictures that I
take. The scenery was amazing and I had lots of fun. Even
though it was only the first day of being in PEOPLE, for me I
know that I will gain a lot from this program and I will make
many discoveries and connections, and at the same time, have
fun. -

Yesterday, I took photos and it was amazing. The construction
was loud and creative so I took a picture of that. The people
all had to be somewhere and they were in a hurry, but luckily I
could stop them in time to take a few photos of them. The
street was full of flea markets and people were in a hurry to
get what they wanted. Everyone was in a hurry to get to work
or to see someone. It looked like a rush hour of people in the
morning.
Then the next thing I took a picture of was the lake. The lake
was very high and the signs in the water were no longer there.
The waves that crashed to shore were making everything on
their path wet and no longer to be seen. The boats in the
water were rocking back and forth and it looked like every
time I looked away they got smaller and smaller. The geese
were having a hard time getting into the water because every
time they finally got in, the wave pushed them back to land.
The last thing I saw coming back was clouds just floating in
the sky. The sun was hiding and so was the blue from the sky.

Yesterday, our class went outside and took pictures of things
we thought  were interesting and that we usually don’t see. I
took  a picture of the waves. There was this wave that was
really tall it was up to my waist.  I also took a picture of the
ducks. The water from the waves in the Memorial Union was
really tall you could not even see the sign that said, "Do not
feed the ducks." -

It was really cool to take pictures yesterday because the weather was nice and we were
able to take many pictures in different surroundings easily. It was really amazing to
take pictures of the waves on the dock. The water was so high that it splashed up so
fast and big. When we were in library mall, it was really fun to just take pictures of the
things we thought were interesting. It was a little hard to figure out how to use the
lighting to make the picture look good, I just hope my pictures turn out nice.
I’m really excited to start to take pictures and write our stories. It seems like it’s going
to be a great workshop. Seeing the paper come together is going to be really fun and
worthwhile, and I think that our paper will turn out great! -

It was so awesome taking photos yesterday. I had lots of fun
because I got to really get up close to the water and fruits and other
things and take some really good pictures. Also I’m used to just
taking a photo and hoping it would turn out good. This time, I knew
my photo was going to turn out well because I learned lots of new
techniques and learned certain ways I can take a good picture. Also,
when we went down to the Union Terrace, the funniest thing
happened to me ... my name tag fell off in the water. It was just
floating away peacefully. The water was so bad it broke off a piece of
where the lifeguards sit. And the lifeguards couldn’t go out there.
Another thing, even though the water was high, people were still out
there on boats like nothing at all was wrong, like everything was
plain old normal.-

It was fun taking photos yesterday. The lake was really cool and the
waves were amazing too. The lake was much bigger than last year
too, because I went to the lake last year and it was much smaller
than this year.  There used to be about four stairs so that you can
sit down on them, but now, this year, you couldn’t because the lake
has grown much bigger and the stairs can't be seen. Watching Lake
Mendota much bigger, I think of the houses that have been flooded
and the gardens that have been flooded, too. That makes me sad
just thinking of it. -

Yesterday, I got the opportunity to take pictures at the
Library Mall and the Union Terrace with my class. The
weather, although quite windy, was gorgeous. The scattered
clouds provided us with some shade from the hot sun and
also allowed us to take some pictures using the flash on our
cameras. When I was down at the waters’ edge of Lake
Mendota, I was able to capture the waves crashing into the
cement steps that lead up to the lakeshore path. This image
reminded me of a tall and spiky fin of a fish—like a
swordfish was racing along the waters’ edge. I was also able
to take pictures of the flowers and other plants around the
Library Mall and the Terrace. It was fun to experiment with
different angles as I took each picture. I took pictures from
the tops of flowers as well as if I were at eye-level with the
various plants and flowers. I am excited to see how all of my
pictures turn out.-
